The Yard Rose : An Avalon Romance
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Bouregy & Co (October, 2000)
Average review score:

"The Yard Rose" roots run deepThe roots of Glory and Quaid's blossoming love in "The Yard Rose" by Carolyn Brown run deep. Their tumultutous twister of a relationship has the reader captivated from the first fight over the flowers. I highly recommend all of Carolyn Brown's books.
The Yard RoseWho can ever forget that first love, even at seven years old? Glory Flowers sure didn't. She never forgot the episode with the flowers or anything. Even at seven love can be agonizing and when you grow older, miserable, but it is there and never fades. Glory and Quaid were meant to be together. But separations and many winded arguments kept them apart. When they are finally able to get together, they finally see that they indeed were meant to be together. When disaster strikes, causing Glory to lose her most valuable possession that has reminded her of Quaid all these years, she soon discovers that she really hasn't lost but found the one person that she wants to live with for the rest of her life, her one true love. The Yard Rose is a tender love story, yet strong. I cried, I laughed, I grabbed tissues. I loved this book. Ms Brown has a way of writing that puts you right there inside the book with the characters. There were times I wanted to knock Rachel to the other side of the world, with Milly right along with her. The Yard Rose is a book that deserves ten stars plus and two thumbs up. If you haven't read this book, you really should read it. You will not be disappointed!!!! I have read it twice and still love it!
The Yard RoseThis author loves to write about small Oklahoma towns! This book is set in Terral, Oklahoma. I lived there as a young child...it looked exactly like she describes it! Glory and Quaid's love story is a powerful one! I felt like I was right there--I laughed. I cried! I got angry! How dare that Rachel even look at Glory's Quaid! I love a book that starts with action and holds my interest. I want to FEEL the characters emotions, not be told them. When I finish a book I want to care about the characters. The Yard Rose is such a book! Wish there was a sequel...

You Don't Look 35 Charlie Brown
Published in Hardcover by Holt Rinehart & Winston (October, 1985)

You Don't Look 35, Charlie BrownBeing a Snoopy's fan for more than 20 years, I really enjoy knowing the insight of Charles M.Schulz's comics. This book tells you the motive and reasons behind his work. A very enjoyable book!
It's A Wonderful LifeIf you are unable to spring for Peanuts: A Golden Celebration (which, by the way, is worth every penny), try this one. This has a lot of Mr Schulz' favorite strips and he intersperses these with a number of comments about them. Now that Mr Schulz is gone, it is a memorial to how much he has accomplshed.
the book is neati think it is a pretty good story that provides comic strips as the drawer talk. I expecially liked the art

You're Too Much Reggie Brown
Published in Paperback by LMH Publishers (March, 2001)
Average review score:

FIVE STARThis book brought tears to my eyes, because I had to relate to someone that reminded me of myself 15 years ago. It made me remember how in my adolescence I had to struggle with the same issues. I enjoyed reading about a bright, energetic, and intelligent young girl who blossoms into an amazing character. Her story wants me to get involved in my adult community by helping others in hopes that is is never too late. I am buying this book for some more youth in my community. It makes me want to achieve my dreams. I am looking forward to reading the next sequel and hope that all who read this book will remember to give love and respect due to the author Kamichi Jackson.
A must read for youths and adultsThis first in a series is simply the best of the youth oriented readers I have ever read. This was an easy page turner and I can just see young African American girls curled up in a comfy spot engrossed in these heartwarming stories. Believable situations and reactions from Miss Brown. Loving and dignified family and extended family portrayals. I loved the accurate depiction of African American life, culture, and situations in all the stories, but how these shined through in "The New and Improved Reggie Brown". What little black girl hasn't struggled with the "good hair/bad hair", and true definition of beauty dilemmma on some level. This story captures the essence of those issue with a lovely lesson to boot. Also, as an African American female growing up with two brothers, I can totally relate to the sibling spats and teasing. While I don't fancy myself a book reviewer, I know what I like and Reggie Brown is a hit. Adults who read these will relive their own youth. Girls and boys will be caught up in the rich story telling, positive images, and valuable lessons. Wish this series was around when I was a little girl. I can't wait for the second installment!! Great work, Ms. Jackson.
A New Middle Series In The Making ....I think this book is must read for children ages 7 through 13. What the book does is gives Black children (Afircan-Americans) in particular another opportunity to read positive stories about themselves while learning valuable lessons. The book is an uplifting piece because it helps the young reader to not only learn lessons about life on their level, but it also helps them develop positve self images. The reader sees him or herself as a beautiful and valuable person with something to give and something to gain. I reccomend that parents and adults buy the book and give it to a child so they can experience some good literature as well as learn some good values. The book is a very good read for both boys and girls, not just girls. I hope the writer will bring us more full stories in the future about Reggie Brown and hopefully turn Reggie Brown into a series. Reggie is a refreshing character that is full of energy and surprises and I'm sure there are many stories and experiences children would love to read about with Reggie Brown in it. Get the book for a child, but take a peek and read it yourself. I'm sure you will like it, I did.

Youth Gangs in American Society
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (20 July, 2000)
Average review score:

Youth GangsThis book is by far one of the most innovative and insightful books that I have read in some time. They also challenge the more common images that gangs represent as well. I found myself questioning the basic reasons for there are gangs in America, and found myself finding a whole new perspectie as these people view their dscieion to be in a gang as an economic choice of survival, not that of one they get into because they have a choice.
I recommend this book STRONGLY for all students of Criminal Justice.
Youth GangsI found this to be one of the most informative books about understanding the gang concept in America. Howerver, it also helped me to debunk the same myths about gang and agang structure as well. This book made me look at gangs as an alternative economic choice for those involved in the gangs and the difficult choices that many of them face that those on the outside of the gang life will never have to make.
I would rate this book on a list of must reads for anyone interested in a study of criminal justice.
Good articulation of gang research into a well-written text.Shelden and colleagues do an excellent job in analyzing the literature, from Thrasher to present, on gangs and the culture surrounding them. They critically examine statistical data and use several sociological theories in an attempt to better understand this growing societal phenomena. The original research from the Detroit area interviews is compelling. Certainly a book that would aid anyone's understanding of gangs, gang culture, or even graffiti (they use photographs to help explain this). Scholars looking for a book as a supplemental text in Delinquency or like courses would find this book a great asset!

Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (September, 1999)
Average review score:

ZOOMZingersZoe, Jared, Keiko, Pablo, Alisa, David, and Lynese will show you what crazy body zingers and zany mind tricks fans have sent in. Stuff like pundles, card tricks, and group juggling. The pictures taken are great-quality, so you can see how to do the zinger. Don't forget to sneak a peak at the last page to see how you can send your ideas to ZOOM, the show by kids and for kids. And ZOOMfun IS contagious!
Be zingered from and by the kids who helped make this book! This book has helped make logical reasoning possible, and it took thousands of kids to make a book (there is one author who put it all together) like this one here. I definetly recommend this book to ZOOMers all around the world and also these books: ZOOMdos You Can Do!, ZOOMfun Outside, and ZOOMfun With Friends. If you got through these books, I suggest moving to videos. These are great: The Making of ZOOM, Party With ZOOM, and ZOOM: Best of the 70's. Once you are done with those...I cannot know. Hope you have a great summer!
rEaLlY gReAt BoOk! :)This book is really good. If you like to watch the ZOOM tvseries, like me, than you'll like this book because it is Zingers thatwere on ZOOM. The only thing is that this book is from Season 1, and season 1 of ZOOM is over already and Season 2 is on with a new cast. But I still think that this is a really great book and I definitly recommend reading it.

220 Aran Stitches and Patterns - Volume 5 (Harmony Guides)
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (01 October, 1998)
Average review score:

What a great resourceWhenever I decide to design a sweater with cables, I turn to this book. It's easy to use and the charts are great. It's a wonderful asset for any knitters library.
Designing your own Aran Isle made simpleThis book provides a brief history of Aran knitting, an overview and how to explanation of aran knitting techniques, explanation of how to design an Aran Isle sweater, and written as well as chart instructions on 220 patterns. What I found most helpful was the grouping of patterns according to row repeats, from 2 row patterns to 48 row patterns. There were 14 1/2 page examples of Aran combinations with tables showing the row and stich number for each pattern used. These combination examples illustrate how the Aran designs of different length and with can be group to create unique designs.
This book is ideal for someone familiar with Aran Isle knitting who wants the freedom to design their own creations. A book most useful to intermediate to advance knitters, it covers the basics so well it would also be helpful to beginners with an interest in design.

Across A Dark & Wild Sea
Published in Hardcover by Roaring Brook (01 March, 2002)
Average review score:

Recommended for readers of all agesDeftly written and superbly illustrated by Don Brown, Across A Dark And Wild Sea is the true story of Columcille (also known as Columba), a beloved figure from Celtic history. Columcille loved books so much that he secretly copied a volume of psalms from Rome against it's owner's wishes. The resulting and bitter fallout in 521 A.D. caused Columcille to deliberately leave Ireland in a tiny boat, vowing never to return. He founded a famous monastery on the Scottish island of Iona and left a legacy that endures to this day. Brought to life with moody, windswept color illustrations, Across A Dark And Wild Sea is a most engaging picture book and recommended for readers of all ages.
The Man Who Loved Books....."Columcille was born in 521. He was the son of a king, from a corner of Ireland scrubbed hard by ocean winds, in a time that came to be known as the dark ages..." So begins Don Brown's marvelous picture book biography of the scribe and monk, known now as Saint Columba. Brown traces the Celtic legend of this remarkable man who desperately wanted to bring learning and books back into the world after much was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. After a bloody war was waged over the copying and ownership of a special book of psalms, Columcille left Ireland forever and with twelve followers "set sail on a dark and wild sea." Landing on the tiny Scottish island of Iona, he and his followers built a monastery and scriptorium where books were copied and scribes were trained. "Books were made and dispatched, like small boats on a dark and wild sea, to places where reading and writing had been forgotten or ignored. The books made colonies of learning, and people's minds, once dark with ignorance, were brightened." Mr Brown's poetic text is filled with imagery, is rich in history and drama and complemented by powerful and evocative artwork in quiet and subdued tones. Together word and art bring Columcille's inspiring story to life with passion and respect. Perfect for youngsters 8 and older, or as a read aloud for younger children, Across A Dark And Wild Sea includes an Author's Note to enhance and complete the story, the Unical alphabet used by scribes, and a bibliography. This is a rare and wonderful story celebrating books and learning, that shouldn't be missed. "Columcille, the man who loved books, helped the world love books. So we remember him and retell his story."

Addy Saves the Day: A Summer Story (The American Girls Collection/Book Five)
Published in Hardcover by Pleasant Company Publications (September, 1994)
Average review score:

This book is great! This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a ten-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1865. With the war over, Trinity A.M.E. Church decides to hold a fair to raise money for those hurt or displaced. Addy's idea for the children to hold a puppet show and sell the puppets is warmly received, but everything looks gloomy when she and Sarah are partnered with Harriet. Everything depends on the girls working together, much more so then they realized, so the girls must come together to overcome.
The final chapter is an informative look at outdoor activities in 1865. This is another, wonderful book, well written, with a captivating storyline and great lessons. My daughter is an Addy fan, and so am I! This book is great!

But when the money is stolen, Addy and Harriet must work toghether to get it back. Addy also meets a surprise person in this book. Addy Saves The Day is one of my favorite American Girl books because it is fun and exciting to read and I definitely recommend it.

Algebra: The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (K-12) (1998)
Average review score:

ExcellentThe University of Chicago Math Series is excellent as an self-study or in-classroom math series. I prefer it over other curriculums I have used.
"Chicago Math" Algebra text is Excellent! Our 14 yr. old (homeschooled) daughter just completed this University of Chicago's Algebra textbook. She found the text complete, thorough, and very easy to follow! She found it to be an almost completely 'self taught' course! She also enjoyed the colorful pictures, extra projects sections, and the interesting sidenotes which included world trivia topics. We have been successfully using the Saxon math text books for all of our lower grade math work thus far, and were somewhat reluctant to try something "new" and different. But right from the start, our daughter LOVED the Chicago math, and welcomed the change. I just wish that there had been a text like this for me, her mother, when I was struggling through Algebra back in the '70's. We would highly recommend this math textbook, and it's clear solution manual to ANYONE studying Algebra! Go ahead and try something different this year!

All The Way From Texas - An Avalon Romance
Published in Hardcover by Avalon Books (24 June, 2000)
Average review score:

A Well-Traveled Love in "All the Way from Texas"Molly and Carson's friendship and eventually love begins to grow with each mile they travel in "All the Way from Texas." Carolyn Brown makes the reader want to hop in the car and continue the travels with her in her many romances and historical romances with Avalon Books.
All The Way From TexasIf you ever wanted to read a story about traveling, then you should reach for this book. From the first page all the way to the last you will be surrounded by a road trip that Carolyn Brown has given her readers moments to pause as they travel from Texas to Canada and back. Even a trip to Alaska as Carolyn paints us the whale with the snow and gray skies in the back ground. It was breathtaking when we read about Niagara Falls but when the couple get to Alaska, the moments of pause and beauty are picturesque. Ms Brown delivers another wonderful story from the beginning about the 'cow patty' to Carson losing a bet at pool to cooking breakfast. This book is terrific. The conversation between Molly and Carson draws you right in their midst.
I loved the part where every time they traveled and stopped, they were asked where they were from by the difference in the way they spoke. Who doesnt't get that when they travel?
From the long awaited kiss after the mind bantering while they were eating the Taco's was wonderful. Not to mention how their muscles ached from all their traveling. You are there with the two every step of the way.
Beth and Darrin deserved to be together. A lot of people like that in this world. Molly never needed anyone like that man in her life.
Carson and Molly will be characters in my mind always whenever I travel the open roads.
Ms Brown shared the open road in picturesque beauty with the characters and moments that she wrote in this another wonderful book that deserves a ten plus. It's a keeper!!!
